Christian Marriage Counseling in Louisville, Kentucky

Experienced, professional marriage counseling consistent with and supportive of your Christian faith

Marriage can be a source of friendship, intimacy, partnership, support, and shared faith. Christian marriage counseling in Louisville can provide a place to strengthen that relationship or address problems that have become difficult to resolve on your own.

Some couples seek counseling because they are hurting. They may feel disconnected, find themselves stuck in recurring conflict, or be trying to rebuild trust after infidelity or another betrayal. Others have a good marriage and want to make it stronger—to communicate better, deepen their connection and intimacy, grow spiritually together, or become more intentional about their relationship.

For Christian couples, marriage counseling can provide a place to work on your relationship with a therapist who understands that your faith matters. Biblical truth can be applied to the realities you are facing while clinical approaches provide understanding and practical tools to help create meaningful change.

With more than 30 years of clinical experience—including 17 years serving as a therapist in Southeast Christian Church’s Counseling Ministry—I provide Christian marriage counseling for couples who want experienced professional counseling that is consistent with and supportive of their faith. I am Gottman Method Level 3 trained and specialize in infidelity and betrayal recovery.

For couples working through infidelity or betrayal, I also offer an intensive counseling option specifically designed for the recovery process.

Christian Faith and Marriage Counseling

For Christian couples, faith can shape how you understand marriage, commitment, love, forgiveness, grace, responsibility, faithfulness, intimacy, and the way you are called to relate to one another.

Christian marriage counseling provides an opportunity to apply biblical truth to the real-life challenges of marriage while also using sound clinical approaches to understand what may be getting in the way of change.

You may know that you want to respond with patience but become reactive. You may value grace but struggle to move beyond hurt. You may want to listen and understand but become defensive. You may believe deeply in the importance of your marriage while still feeling disconnected from your spouse.

Counseling can help you understand the patterns beneath these responses and develop practical ways of responding differently. This may include considering how grace and truth, humility, responsibility, forgiveness, faithfulness, healthy boundaries, wisdom, and commitment apply to what you are actually facing.

Grace does not require ignoring unhealthy patterns. Forgiveness does not eliminate the need for accountability. Commitment to marriage does not mean difficult issues should remain unaddressed.

The goal is to address problems honestly while becoming more intentional about living out what you believe in the way you relate to one another.

Strengthening Your Marriage

Marriage counseling is not only for couples whose relationship is in crisis. Some couples come because communication has broken down, trust has been damaged, or they have grown increasingly disconnected. Others have a good marriage and want to make it stronger.

Marriage counseling can help couples:

* Communicate more effectively and understand one another better
* Change recurring patterns of conflict
* Strengthen friendship and emotional connection
* Deepen emotional, physical, and spiritual intimacy
* Rebuild trust
* Navigate differences involving faith or spiritual life
* Adjust to significant life changes together
* Address the impact of infidelity or another betrayal
* Become more intentional about their marriage

Emotional, physical, and spiritual intimacy are all meaningful parts of marriage. Counseling can help you explore what may be interfering with closeness and strengthen the friendship, affection, trust, connection, and shared faith that support intimacy.

You do not have to wait until your marriage is in crisis to invest in it.

What Each of You Brings Into the Marriage Matters

Each spouse brings a personal history into the marriage. Early relationships and attachment experiences can influence how we experience closeness, trust, conflict, rejection, vulnerability, and emotional safety.

Trauma, difficult life experiences, family-of-origin patterns, previous relationships, anxiety, shame, or longstanding beliefs about ourselves can also affect how we respond to a spouse.

One person may pursue conversation when feeling disconnected while the other withdraws. One spouse may become highly reactive to criticism or rejection, while another may shut down or become emotionally distant when conflict feels overwhelming. Sometimes the intensity of a response in the present is connected to experiences that occurred long before the marriage began.

Understanding these influences is not about blaming the past or excusing hurtful behavior. It can help you understand **why a pattern keeps happening and what may be needed to change it.**

Nervous System Regulation and Showing Up Differently

Sometimes knowing how you *want* to respond is not enough. During conflict, disconnection, criticism, rejection, or other emotionally charged experiences, the nervous system can move quickly into a protective response.

You may become reactive, defensive, overwhelmed, shut down, withdraw, or find it difficult to stay present enough to listen and respond in the way you would like.

When appropriate, I incorporate somatic and nervous-system-informed approaches into marriage counseling. Learning to recognize what is happening in your body and strengthen your ability to regulate your nervous system can help you slow automatic reactions, remain more present with your spouse, and have greater choice in how you respond.

The goal is not simply to calm down. It is to increase your capacity to remain present during difficult moments so you can show up differently in your marriage and respond in ways that are more consistent with your values and the person you want to be.

Much of the work involving attachment patterns, difficult experiences, emotional responses, and ways of coping can be addressed within marriage counseling when those issues are affecting the relationship. At times, an individual concern may need more focused attention through individual therapy, and we can discuss that when appropriate.

Gottman Method Marriage Counseling

I am trained in Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the Gottman Method and use Gottman-based assessment, interventions, and practical tools in my work with couples.

Grounded in decades of relationship research, the Gottman Method can help couples strengthen friendship, improve communication, manage conflict more effectively, build trust, deepen intimacy, and create greater shared meaning.

For Christian couples, these clinical tools can be used in a way that is consistent with their faith and the biblical values that guide their marriage. They can help you recognize patterns that interfere with the way you want to relate to one another and develop practical ways of responding differently.

When Communication and Connection Have Become Difficult

Many couples do not lack love or commitment. They have become caught in patterns that make it increasingly difficult to hear, understand, or feel close to one another.

A conversation may begin with a relatively small issue and quickly turn into criticism, defensiveness, anger, withdrawal, or silence. Other couples rarely fight but gradually begin to feel more like roommates than husband and wife.

Work, children, responsibilities, stress, health concerns, unresolved hurt, and the demands of everyday life can also leave little room for the friendship and intimacy that once came more naturally.

Marriage counseling can help you understand what is happening between you and develop healthier ways of expressing concerns, listening, managing conflict, repairing after difficult interactions, and reconnecting.

The goal is not to eliminate disagreement. It is to learn how to navigate differences without allowing them to erode the friendship, trust, respect, and connection at the center of your marriage.

Specialized Counseling for Infidelity & Betrayal Recovery

Infidelity and betrayal recovery is an area of specialization in my work with couples. An affair or another significant betrayal can shake trust, commitment, emotional safety, intimacy, and a couple’s assumptions about the future of their marriage.

For Christian couples, betrayal can also bring difficult questions about repentance, forgiveness, accountability, boundaries, reconciliation, and commitment.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are related, but they are not identical. Rebuilding a marriage after betrayal requires more than asking the injured spouse to forgive or expecting trust to return quickly.

Counseling can provide a structured place to address the impact of the betrayal, establish appropriate accountability and boundaries, understand what is needed for healing, and determine what is necessary for trust to be rebuilt.

When both partners choose to work toward restoring the marriage, the process can hold grace and truth together—taking the betrayal and its impact seriously while creating the conditions for accountability, healing, and meaningful change.

Intensive Counseling for Infidelity Recovery

For couples working through infidelity or betrayal, I also offer an intensive counseling option. This provides more focused time to address the impact of the betrayal and work through the recovery process than is typically available in standard weekly sessions.

I offer this intensive format specifically for couples seeking infidelity and betrayal recovery.

Experience Working With Christian Couples

I have worked with individuals and couples for more than three decades. For 17 of those years, I served as a therapist in the Counseling Ministry at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville.

During those years, I worked extensively with people who wanted professional counseling that understood and respected the importance of their Christian faith. That experience continues to shape the way I work with Christian couples today.

I bring together more than 30 years of clinical experience, Gottman Method Level 3 training, specialization in infidelity and betrayal recovery, and an understanding of the importance faith can have in marriage, intimacy, conflict, forgiveness, commitment, healing, and growth.
