Professional Counseling Grounded in an Understanding of Christian Faith
For many Christians, faith isn’t simply one part of life. It shapes how you understand relationships, marriage, suffering, forgiveness, responsibility, purpose, growth, and the person you want to become.
People seek counseling for many reasons. Sometimes you are facing a difficult season—anxiety, relationship problems, betrayal, stress, or a major life transition. Other times, life may be going relatively well, but you want to grow, strengthen your marriage or other important relationships, understand yourself better, or become better equipped for what lies ahead.
Sometimes you know how you want to show up but find it difficult to consistently do so. You want to be patient but become reactive. You want to listen but become defensive. You want to trust but find yourself anxious or guarded. You know what you believe and the values you want to live by, yet emotions, past experiences, or long-standing patterns sometimes get in the way.
Counseling can help you understand what is happening beneath those patterns, work through what is difficult, and develop the skills and awareness needed to respond differently.
How faith is integrated into counseling is always guided by you.
Some clients specifically seek Christian counseling and want their faith to be an active part of the counseling process. When Christian counseling is requested, faith and clinical counseling are integrated rather than treated as separate parts of the process. Your relationship with God, Scripture, and the beliefs and values that flow from your faith can be considered alongside psychological, relational, emotional, and physiological understanding.
Other Christian clients prefer primarily clinical counseling from a therapist who respects their Christian faith and worldview without explicitly integrating faith into sessions. I also provide counseling that is not faith-informed for clients who are not Christians or who prefer a fully clinical approach that respects their own values, beliefs, and counseling goals.
I am Carmen Frederick, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Florida with over 30 years of counseling experience. I provide Christian counseling for adults and couples in Port Charlotte through secure Telehealth, as well as Christian counseling throughout Florida. with limited in-person counseling also available in Lakewood Ranch/Bradenton near University Town Center (UTC).
17 Years in the Counseling Ministry at Southeast Christian Church
Before entering private practice, I spent 17 years serving as a therapist in the Counseling Ministry at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky. During that time, I had the opportunity to work with individuals and couples through many different seasons of life—from those wanting to grow personally or strengthen their relationships to those facing anxiety, marital difficulties, family concerns, significant transitions, or other challenging circumstances.
Those years gave me extensive experience working with people for whom Christian faith is an important part of their lives. They also reinforced something I continue to believe today: good clinical counseling and Christian faith do not have to be separated. Counseling can address emotional, relational, and psychological concerns while respecting and integrating the client’s Christian faith when that is the type of counseling they are seeking.
For those who are familiar with Southeast Christian Church, have relocated from the Louisville area to Southwest Florida, or spend part of the year in Florida, my background may also provide a familiar point of connection.
What Christian Counseling Looks Like
When clients choose Christian counseling, it remains professional mental health counseling grounded in clinical training, ethical standards, and evidence-based approaches. Depending on your needs, I may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), attachment-based therapy, somatic and neuroscience-informed approaches, trauma-informed care, and the Gottman Method for couples.
Change often involves more than simply knowing what to do or trying harder. Our emotional responses, nervous system, relationships, past experiences, and learned patterns can all influence how we respond.
You may find yourself asking:
* Why do I keep reacting this way when I want to respond differently?
* Why do I understand what I *should* do but have such a hard time doing it?
* How can I communicate more effectively with the people I love?
* How do I forgive while also addressing hurt and rebuilding trust wisely?
* How do I set healthy boundaries while remaining loving and connected?
* What patterns from my past are affecting my relationships today?
* How can I strengthen my marriage or other important relationships?
* How can I live more consistently with the faith and values that are important to me?
Counseling can help you understand the patterns influencing your responses and develop healthier, more intentional ways of responding.
Individual Christian Counseling
Individual counseling can provide support during difficult seasons as well as an opportunity for growth, greater self-understanding, and meaningful change.
You may be dealing with anxiety, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, relationship or family concerns, a major life transition, or patterns that have become difficult to change. Or life may be going relatively well, but you recognize areas where you want to grow, respond differently, strengthen your relationships, or become better equipped for the future.
Counseling can help you understand what may be contributing to the way you think, feel, and respond; recognize patterns that may be affecting you or your relationships; and develop practical skills for making meaningful changes.
Christian Marriage and Couples Counseling
Couples seek counseling at many different points in their relationships. Some come because communication has broken down, trust has been damaged, conflict has become difficult to manage, or they feel increasingly disconnected. Others want to strengthen a good marriage, communicate more effectively, deepen friendship and intimacy, prepare for a new season of life, or become more intentional about the relationship they are building together.
I have advanced Level 3 training in the Gottman Method and use Gottman-based assessment, interventions, and practical tools to help couples better understand their relationship patterns and build the skills that contribute to a strong, healthy marriage.
Couples counseling may address:
* Communication and recurring conflict
* Friendship and emotional connection
* Intimacy
* Trust and commitment
* Infidelity and betrayal recovery
* Family stress
* Major life transitions
* Preparing for retirement or an empty nest
* Differences involving faith or spiritual life
For Christian couples, faith may be an important part of how they understand marriage, commitment, forgiveness, grace, responsibility, and the changes they want to make. When couples choose Christian counseling, their faith—including their relationship with God, Scripture, and the beliefs and values that flow from their faith—can be integrated with the clinical relationship work we are doing.
Anxiety, Stress, and Emotional Regulation
Anxiety, chronic stress, and emotional overwhelm can affect how you think, feel, relate to others, and move through everyday life. You may find yourself overthinking, anticipating what could go wrong, becoming easily overwhelmed or reactive, or having difficulty settling even when you know logically that you are okay.
Counseling can help you better understand what is driving these responses. Thoughts are part of the picture, but so are your nervous system, past experiences, relationships, and patterns your mind and body may have learned over time.
Together, we can work on practical ways to regulate emotional and physiological responses, understand patterns that keep anxiety going, and help you respond with greater flexibility rather than automatically reacting from fear, stress, or overwhelm.
Experiencing anxiety or emotional distress does not mean that you lack faith or simply need to “trust God more.”
Life Transitions, Retirement, and Relocation
Major life transitions can bring both opportunity and unexpected challenges. Retirement, relocating to Florida, becoming an empty nester, changes in health, caregiving responsibilities, or entering a different season of marriage can affect relationships, routines, purpose, and your sense of what comes next.
Sometimes the transition itself is difficult. Other times, the change reveals things that were easier to overlook before—a marriage that feels different with more time together, difficulty building meaningful connections after a move, uncertainty about how you want to spend this stage of life, or simply realizing that the life you anticipated feels different from the one you are actually living.
Counseling can provide support as you adjust to what has changed and help you consider what you want this next season of life to look like, including questions of purpose, meaning, relationships, and what matters most.
