Couples Counseling in Kentucky

Couples counseling to strengthen communication, connection, and trust

Couples seek counseling for many reasons. Some want to communicate more effectively, feel closer, and strengthen emotional or physical intimacy. Others come during seasons of strain—when conflict has increased, trust has been broken, or the relationship feels uncertain.

Whether you are hoping to strengthen an already solid relationship or address significant challenges such as infidelity or emotional distance, couples counseling can provide structure, clarity, and support for meaningful change.

Why couples seek counseling

Couples come to therapy for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Difficulty communicating or resolving conflict
  • Feeling emotionally or physically disconnected
  • Recurring arguments or patterns that feel stuck
  • Stress related to parenting, work, or life transitions
  • Recovery after infidelity or betrayal
  • Desire to strengthen connection and intimacy

Some couples seek counseling proactively to strengthen their relationship. Others come after something important has been disrupted. Both are appropriate and valid reasons to begin.

What couples counseling looks like in my practice

My approach to couples counseling is structured, collaborative, and evidence-based. Therapy focuses on helping couples understand interaction patterns, improve communication, and respond to one another with greater emotional awareness and intention.

Couples counseling may include:

  • Building effective communication and conflict-management skills
  • Identifying and changing negative interaction cycles
  • Strengthening emotional safety and friendship
  • Exploring attachment needs and relationship patterns
  • Supporting greater closeness and intimacy

I integrate the Gottman Method, attachment-based therapy, neuroscience-informed care, and somatic approaches to support lasting relational change.

You can learn more about the Gottman Method on the Gottman Method Counseling page.

Couples counseling for infidelity and betrayal

Infidelity and other forms of relational betrayal can be deeply destabilizing for both partners. Couples may feel overwhelmed, unsure how to talk about what happened, or uncertain about whether repair is possible.

Couples counseling provides a structured and supportive environment to:

  • Address the emotional impact of betrayal
  • Restore a sense of stability and safety
  • Clarify boundaries and expectations
  • Explore whether and how trust can be rebuilt

This work is paced carefully and guided by the couple’s goals, readiness, and capacity.

Infidelity recovery intensives

Some couples benefit from a more focused approach than weekly therapy can provide. I offer infidelity recovery intensives for couples who want a structured, time-limited framework to address betrayal and begin the repair process.

Infidelity intensives are designed for couples who want:

  • A clear plan rather than open-ended therapy
  • Focused time to address the impact of infidelity
  • Guidance and accountability between sessions
  • Practical tools for rebuilding trust and connection

Additional details are available on the Infidelity Recovery Counseling page.

Faith-informed couples counseling (available if desired)

I offer faith-informed couples counseling for couples who want their Christian faith thoughtfully integrated into the therapeutic process, while remaining grounded in professional, evidence-based care.

I bring particular depth to this work through my experience of spending 17 years serving in the counseling ministry of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, where I worked extensively with couples navigating communication difficulties, relational conflict, infidelity, and major life transitions.

This experience informs my work with couples for whom faith and personal values are an important part of their relationship, while maintaining a clinically sound and respectful approach. To learn more about my faith-informed approach, go to my Faith-Informed and Christian Counseling page.

At the same time, faith is never assumed or required in couples counseling. Many couples prefer a more neutral, clinical approach, and that preference is fully respected. Therapy is always guided by the couple’s goals, values, and comfort level.

Who couples counseling works best for

Couples counseling is often a good fit for couples who:

  • Want to strengthen or repair their relationship
  • Are open to examining patterns rather than assigning blame
  • Value structure, clarity, and practical tools
  • Are willing to engage thoughtfully in the process
